Modelling simple stellar populations in the near-ultraviolet to near-infrared with the X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL)

چکیده

We present simple stellar population models based on the empirical X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL) from near-ultraviolet (NUV) to near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. The unmatched characteristics of relatively high resolution and extended wavelength coverage (350–2480 nm, R ∼ 10 000) XSL bring us closer bridging optical NIR studies intermediate-age old populations. It is now common find good agreement between observed predicted NUV properties clusters due our understanding main-sequence early giant phases stars. However, spectra populations are sensitive cool K M giants. asymptotic branch, especially thermally pulsing shapes 0.5–2 Gyr populations; tip red branch defines older therefore construct sequences average static giants, variable O-rich C-rich giants be included in separately. span metallicity range −2.2 < [Fe/H] +0.2 ages above 50 Myr, a broader than other spectral libraries. focus behaviour colours absorption-line indices as function age metallicity. Our can reproduce integrated Coma cluster galaxies at same level semi-empirical found literature. In NIR, there notable differences galaxies. Furthermore, expand values compared make it possible perform in-depth features consistently throughout clarify role evolved stars

Near–Infrared Spectroscopy and Young Stellar Populations

Over the past decade, tremendous progress has been made in applying the techniques of MK classification to spectra obtained from 1–5 μm. This spectral region is rich in atomic and molecular features which are temperature and luminosity sensitive providing a powerful technique to study intrinsically red and/or heavily dust embedded stellar populations. We will summarize recent work with particul...

Near-infrared spectroscopy of stellar populations in nearby spiral galaxies

We present high spatial resolution, medium spectral resolution near-infrared (NIR) Hand K-band long-slit spectroscopy for a sample of 29 nearby (z < 0.01) inactive spiral galaxies, to study the composition of their NIR stellar populations. These spectra contain a wealth of diagnostic stellar absorption lines, e.g., Mg I 1.575 μm, Si I 1.588 μm, CO (6–3) 1.619 μm, Mg I 1.711 μm, Na I 2.207 μm, C...

X-shooter Near-IR Spectrograph Arm Realisation

X-shooter is a new high-efficiency spectrograph observing the complete spectral range of 300-2500 nm in a single exposure, with a spectral resolving power R>5000. The instrument will be located at the Cassegrain focus of one of the VLT UTs and consists of three spectrographs: UV, VIS and Near-IR. This paper addresses the design, hardware realization and performance of the Near-IR spectrograph o...

The Coma Cluster Luminosity Function from Ultraviolet to Near–infrared

The Coma cluster luminosity function (LF) from ultraviolet (2000Å) to the near–infrared (H band) is summarized. In the U V the LF is very steep, much steeper than in the optical. The steep Coma U V LF implies that faint and bright galaxies give similar contributions to the total U V flux and to the total metal production rate. The Coma U V LF is dominated in number and luminosity by blue galaxi...

New Light on the Stellar Populations in I Zw 18: Deep Near-Infrared Imaging

We present deep JHK images of I Zw 18, the most metal-deficient Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy known, and analyze them in conjunction with archival HST/WFPC2 optical images. To investigate the stellar populations, we have divided the main body of I Zw18 into eight regions, and fit the optical, near-infrared (NIR), and hybrid optical-NIR colors of these and the C component with evolutionary syn...
